Describe the process for unwrapping an ELA standard and determining learning objectives and activities as you would explain it to a new teacher. What are the most important things to keep in mind?

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to some basic concepts about instructional standards, which include their definition, history, implementation, and assessment. Students will also be introduced to the concept of learning outcomes or learning goals that help them understand how they can use these standards to plan instruction throughout the school year. Finally, students will learn how teachers assess student progress toward meeting those learning outcomes through formative assessments such as quizzes, tests, and homework assignments. In addition, students will practice using rubrics by looking at examples from different subjects. I have provided two links below with information on how to create your own rubric template and a link to a website where you can download free rubric templates for other subject areas. This activity should take approximately 45 minutes.

Standard 1A – English Language Arts Standards : Define Standard 1A-2: Demonstrate command of writing conventions and academic language appropriate to grade level content knowledge in support of diverse audiences including texts, multimedia products, and interactive digital media; demonstrate understanding of rhetorical strategies for effective written expression, including organization, style, tone, voice, and format; and employ technology effectively and ethically.

Learning Outcomes & Activities: To meet the above standard students must know what writing conventions are used when composing letters, essays, stories, etc., and understand how to write clearly so others could read what was being said easily.
